On the 31st of January, we will witness a super blue blood moon. Sounds cool right? But what exactly does this mean? This is what I will be explaining in this article.

Firstly, a super moon is when a full moon happens at the time when the moon is closest to the Earth during its orbit, causing it to look larger than normal. A blue moon is when a second full moon occurs in one month. A blood moon is when a lunar eclipse occurs and the moon is turned a reddish colour as it is covered by the Earth’s shadow.

Separately these things are not particularly rare, but together, it is a different story. This is the first time in 150 years that a super blue blood moon has taken place, so this is not something to miss. Unfortunately, if you are here in Britain, you will only be able to see a super blue moon, as by the time we will see the moon here, the lunar eclipse will have ended.

2018 has started off with a magnificent lunar event, and you should keep an eye out for another one. Hopefully if you miss it, you will not have to wait 150 years to see it next!
