Currently the GCSE english literature exam is closed book, however this has led to impossible demands for students to memories quotes from 15 poems, plus to be able to analyse these poems. Students will also have to be able to remember the plot, themes and characters from another book. This is an impossible demand for students who will already have to do on average 10 GCSEs which all require memorising.

It is important for students to be able to memories texts, however is it really fair to expect students to be able to memories 15 poems and quotes from a book. When in later life, will you ever need to be able to recall a text perfectly under extremely stressful situations? If we make the English Literature exam open booked it will help students show off their true potential, not how much they can remember off 15 poems and a book.

Currently there is a petition online to make the English Literature exam open book. This will allow students to be able to answer the question that is being asked in the exam, without the extra stress, of having to remember a series of texts. It currently has over 160,000 signatures, and is being considered for a date for a debate.
