It was essential that Welling took advantage of the momentum they had and kept their winning streak going if they were to have any chance of catching Lewisham Youth at the top of the table.

Their next fixture was a home tie against bottom of the league Fleetdown United, a game that Welling were confident of winning although it was vital that they did not become complacent, especially at this stage of the season. With only five games remaining, picking up all three points was becoming more important with each passing match. The encounter endured a drab start with a very low tempo from both sides, giving it the feel of a training match that neither side could take control of. This along with a lack of attacking potency from both sides and a seeming unwillingness to take command meant that it was anybody’s game. It was Fleetdown that took advantage of some slack Welling defending after a free-kick was floated to the far post and headed in. Then, less than five minutes after the restart, Welling went 2-0 down as another free-kick was played into the area and diverted goal wards off the head of a Welling defender for an own goal. It was vital that Welling started the second half brightly if they were to have any chance of turning this game around and after some stern words from their manager at half time. They quickly pulled a goal back after a slick passing move found its way to Timi Osibodu at the edge of the area and he volleyed home into the bottom corner in style. Within minutes Welling found the equaliser and continued pressing for the winner. In what turned out to be an extremely one sided second half, Welling could not take another one of the numerous chances they created meaning the match ended in a 2-2 draw and with that, any chance of winning the title evaporated.
