A couple from Barking, who deliberately drove to Newham to dump their asbestos ridden materials, were caught on CCTV. This incident occurred in April earlier this year. They not only dumped asbestos ridden materials on to the street, but they did so on a path frequently used by parents and toddlers for a local nursery. The CCTV image shows Naz Jarman who is 51 and his wife Resna Begum who is 41, tipping dangerous materials on to the street.

The reason why asbestos is extremely hazardous is because it harms the lungs and can cause serious lung problems such as lung cancer and asbestosis. People in asbestos mining towns back in the early 1900’s often faced asbestos related diseases and this was where we found out about how dangerous asbestos was. Newham’s dedicated fly tipping task force prevents asbestos as well as many other dangerous things from harming us.

Naz Jarman is now doing 300 hours of community service and has paid £350 and £85 in victim surcharge. Resna will be not be doing community service however, she will be forced to wear a tag for 21 days as well as a 10pm to 6am curfew, she will also be paying the same amount as Naz. Councillor Forhad Hussain has said that “This was a good result for the fly tipping task force”

Next time you need to get rid of unwanted asbestos waste, contact your local council to see what they can do or get in touch with a licensed asbestos removal company. Dumping it on the street just puts many people in harm’s way.
