It’s coming up to May now, which can mean only one thing - upcoming exams. Some local schools have even already started their exam weeks. Exams are what people spend the entire year dreading, which is why when they finally come they can be the cause of extreme stress and worry for everyone. Stress can be really worrisome, which is why it is important to quickly address it and get it under control.

Some symptoms of stress are:

Constant tiredness

Forgetfulness

Poor appetite

Loss of interest in activities

Increased anxiety and irritability

Increased heart rate

Migraines/headaches

Dizziness

These can have bad effects on your body. To lessen stress, take a break to chat with someone who knows what you’re dealing with and they can help you out. Also, make sure you eat healthily, and don’t skip meals. It’s important you get your 5 a day and eat fresh fruit and veg. In addition, you need to make sure you sleep well. Your sleep is important and you end up feeling and looking horrible if you are incredibly tired.

Another important activity you can do is exercise. Don’t get too sloppy and sit at a table all day, it won’t do you any good.

During the exam, if you feel yourself start to panic, look away from your paper and take deep breaths to control your breathing. Breathe in and out through your nose for 5 seconds with each breath until you are calm again, and can go back to your work.

Most importantly, once the exam is done, don’t worry about it! Forget about your results and relax until it’s time to receive your gradings. You will have done just fine.
