St James church in Petts Wood celebrates St Patrick's night in style. The church hired a live band, who played a variety of classic Irish songs that had people of all ages dancing and having a fun time together. The celebration lasted for four hours in total and was started by a brilliant performance of Irish dancing from the children of the church. St Patrick's day celebrates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, this was portrayed in St Patrick's family fun night. The arrival of many Christians coming together to celebrate Irish people and their culture. This celebration is a public holiday in Ireland and is a day when Lenten austerities can be lifted off, according to a party-goer “the fact that you get a little break from your Lenten promise makes the whole occasion lighter.” With the restrictions of lent gone for the evening, it allowed the church to open up the snacks bar filled with all the good Christians had been avoiding in order to give something up for lent. The event has been described as fun and family friendly, the event increased the amount of youth at the church from different churches. It allow for a chance to celebrate diversity in other cultures, this time specifically Ireland. A man aged 43 suggest that “the church should hold events like these more often to increase the amount of people that will feel loved by others in the church.” There will be more events at St James some fun, some reflective but all are worth going to.
