It’s that time of the year again. Activities such as eating chocolate, shopping in the sales and waiting for the Easter bunny’s arrival occupy most people’s minds from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.  How did these activities become associated with Christ’s resurrection? For the vast majority of Christian denominations Easter is the most significant and celebrated holiday – when Jesus Christ gave his life so that we could be free from sin. Easter contrary to popular belief is a completely different celebration to the Pagan celebration of the Spring Equinox. Although the two holidays share roots they are different celebrations of different Gods. Christians prepare for this significant event with 40 days of penance, prayer and fasting leading up to the event.

However, Easter like many other Christian holidays such as Christmas, Saint Patrick’s Day and Saint Valentine’s Day has become grossly over commercialized with the religious aspect often forgotten or left behind. Although there is no harm in participating in Easter egg hunts or egg decorating competitions it is important to remember what Easter truly celebrates and Bromley High School has done just that. Bromley High has organized an Easter egg hunt for the year 8’s and an egg decorating competition in the hall for the whole school but it has also sold hot cross buns at break time with leaflets informing people on the meaning of eating hot cross buns near Easter along with an invitation to attend mass at Bickley’s local st Georges if they wish to. Additionally, the Religious Studies department have organized a 40 days of Lent competition which many forms have taken part in, Nayana Brown a student at Bromley High school and a participator in the challenge said “I think it’s really good that the school are doing this.” Bromley High school is educating people on the meaning of Easter, which is a celebration many people need educating on.
