As we enter winter and the temperatures begin to drop, wrapping up warm is a number one priority. As the Evening Standard said “Health warnings (are being) issued as temperatures set to plummet to -6C in (the) South East.” But, why do we protect ourselves from the cold? Scientists have finally been able to answer this aching question; it is that lower temperatures actually make your nose’s first line of immune defences weaker. A reason why a common cold has the symptoms of a runny nose. This is also why local GPs encourage the elderly to get a winter flu jab, as their immune system is already weak.

However, it is not just the cold weather that can affect your health, if you live in the highly populated cities, you are more likely to get diseases and infections. This is mainly because of the constant contact with many people on commutes. In places like China, masks are very popular to wear to protect yourselves from any spreading diseases as the masks reduces the number ways for viruses to transfer. Also the higher the population, the higher the rate of pollution tends to be, resulting in more lung affected cases as many more citizens breathe in toxic fumes.

Countries like USA and India obtain high obesity rates. What do they both have? America has the highest amount of fast food in restaurants, which we all know are unhealthy and take out Indian food contains high oil and fat levels making these results.

This shows that where you live can really affect your health and welfare but don’t lose hope, a main factor to keeping healthy is willpower. Make sure to keep warm in the winters and limit the amount of oily foods you eat and you will be just fine.
