Last Saturday, 16th March, at Newstead Wood School in Bromley, a group of considerate volunteers gave up several hours of their free time to help renovate the school.

The group who carried out the inspiring tasks consisted of students, parents, staff members, school governors and others who were selfless enough to give up their free time to help refurbish the school. Specifically, the event was organised by the PET of Newstead Wood School.  According to www.newsteadwood.bromley.sch.uk, the Providing Excellence Together (PET) campaign is “a parent-led initiative to ensure that Newstead Wood can continue to offer an outstanding education in the current financial climate of reduced Government funding”.

During the period of ‘Spruce Up Saturday’, numerous objectives were completed. The ‘Spruce Up Saturday Newsletter’ stated that the tasks completed included: the painting of classrooms and corridors, the creation of decorations and artwork for the school hallways, and gardening work at the school’s entrance. Throughout the event, there was a selection of complimentary refreshments for all the helpers.

A student in Year 10 I spoke to about the event, said she thought that “the work done was finesse and the school is now a better place”. She also stated that “the benches look nice and smooth.”

I agree with her and I believe that the event was fantastic and a complete success. As a student, I was pleasantly surprised to come into school on Monday and find many areas of the school building in much better condition than they were before the weekend. I know that a lot of hard work went into it, and would like to say, on behalf of us students, a colossal thank you to everyone that participated in helping renovate the school.
