On the 22nd of January an event took place at my school, celebrating afro-Caribbean culture in its entirety. We decided to host our own fashion show, were they showcased their many talents with singing, dancing and the main event fashion. It was independently organised by the students, and with many efforts they managed to get a celebrity performance.

This is an insider’s report of the show, as one of the featured designers.

The event started with a melodic rendition of, chart topping hotline bling singer Drakes, ‘Just hold on we’re going home’. It was a mellow beginning to the jam-packed evening ahead. We displayed and celebrated all ends of the musical spectrum with each act, and finished with a modern twist.

We had food from all over the continent of Africa, and the Caribbean. It sold very quickly and was in very high demand.

As one of the designer, this was my very first real show, to debut the line that I have been working on for several weeks. The line displayed all the traditional, rich African culture in a youthful form. The second designer showed a more modern and vibrant, Caribbean feel to her line.

We sourced all our own resources, materials and managed to raise £2000 in total, which we willingly gave to an astounding charity, JAGS foundation. JAGS foundation is a beautiful charity that aims to ‘to raise awareness of youth on youth violence by providing services and safe spaces for healing, education and restoration.’

We aim to make this event an annul occurrence.
