Climate change Amaki Doku Farringtons School

You might ask yourself what climate change is and what have I got do with it? Climate change is ‘’A change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.’’ Climate change is to do with the weather and how it is affecting our atmosphere and the extinction of animals. Climate change can affect our health. An example of where climate change happens is Greenland. Greenland is a country where it is mostly filled with Icebergs and glacier ice. Ice glaciers are enormous amounts of snow that have fallen over a long period of time and this thick amount of ice becomes part of the area. In Greenland there are many problems such as sea level rising, this is one of the main causes of the melting of the ice. The ice sheets have become thinner. This could affect global seas. Climate change is a massive danger to the wildlife because it can lead to the extinction of the animals. The rising of sea level is caused by ice braking off and falling into the sea and this causes sea level rising. This could lead to the spreading of other waters also rising.

One thing that can cause the extinction of animal is global warming. Global warming has a bad effect on wildlife. For example birds lay their eggs earlier than their usual time. Plants tend to grow much faster than normal and mammals do not have their normal hibernation time because of global warming. Global warming has forced natural processes to happen faster and it has also caused animals to leave their habitat, especially birds.

Many countries cause a lot of pollution in many ways such as when the petrol or diesel that is added into our cars and then it is released into the atmosphere. Miners who dig for coal breath in unclean air that is full of greenhouse gas and this can cause lung disease. The cause of this is called ‘’Environmental Degradation’’ which is caused by global warming. When fossil fuels are burned and released into the atmosphere there is a dangerous gas that are produced and one main gas is carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas. When carbon dioxide comes in contact with heat it then mixes into the atmosphere. The amount of gases that is in our atmosphere has increased and other gases such as methane and nitrous oxide are found in the atmosphere.

Climate change can affect our health and this is caused by the greenhouse gases that absorb the heat from the sun. These green house gases cause extreme heat that could kill poor air quality and cause diseases to spread more easily. Some hot countries can become very humid throughout the day and night. This can be extremely dangerous and life threatening. Poor air quality is caused by cars burning fuel, really high temperatures and pollution from the power of plants. These all cause the occurrence of smog and this raises all the ghastly gases into the atmosphere. This can really affect our lungs and breathing. Climate change can cause the spreading of disease.

The different types of diseases that you can get from climate change are malaria which is an air born disease and it is spread by mosquitoes, dengue fever is also spread by mosquitoes, West Nile Virus is a disease that is spread by infected mosquito that then bites a birds which then pass it to humans. This illness can be spread through breastfeeding and pregnancy.

There are many organisations that are working hard to make people aware of Climate change such as WWF “Stop climate change before it changes you”, Get up! Action for Australia, Fossil Free, Greenpeace, Many Strong Voices, Loess Plateau water campaign. What we learn from these organisations is that they want us all to have a safer and healthier way of living to prevent health problems such as lung disease. There are many ways we can reduce climate change such instead of using cars we could walk or either cycle. This is a good way of reducing air pollution and as well as helping people to be healthy. You should use renewable energy such as solar panels. People must be encouraged to switch of electrical equipments when not in use to save energy. When you’re not using your computer, phone or TV switch so that you save power. We could reduce the amount of amount of waste especially food waste as well.

It would probably take a long time for the reduction of pollution and for everyone to use less energy and to really help our planet but every little effort will benefit our planet.
