Planting surprises for the springtime

9:51am Monday 24th December 2001

A group of seven pupils from Parkside School spent the last day of term, before the Christmas break, planting daffodils in Leeming Road.

The bulbs were supplied by the charity Groundwork Hertfordshire, as part of a programme of events to make Leeming Road, in Borehamwood, more attractive.

Parkside Primary School's environmental gardener, Alan Downie, supervised the planting, and said the children had enjoyed mucking in.

"They were very enthusiastic. Because it was the last day of school they didn't miss any work, and they did a very good job."

Project officer Ann Woolner, from the environmental charity Groundwork Hertfordshire, said she had been pleased with how much had been achieved on the day. "It was very successful we planted around 300 bulbs in just over an hour."

Some of the children had been involved in a school project to design improvements for Leeming Road, so they were pleased to see some of the ideas being used.

"We are very much trying to reach all the parts of the communities, so it was good that the children got involved. People passing by were taking to them and encouraging them."

The daffodils should blossom in February.
