Good athletes are by definition versatile; after all, athleticism is the basis of all sport.
And there is no better example than Bromley Athletic Club's Robert Bain, who began this year as a champion runner after winning the Bromley area under-15 trials for the London Mini Marathon in tremendous style.
He helped Bromley AC's under-15 squad win the Thameside League ahead of such powerful teams like Belgrave Harriers, Croydon and Herne Hill Harriers.
It was at this time that Robert turned his talents to race-walking Bromley AC's only previous champion in this type of event was Lauren FitzGerald-Smith, who won the under-13 Kent Champion-ship two years ago.
But Robert proved that he has the determination and ability to aspire to even greater heights in the world of race-walking.
Recently he has been making his mark nationally and he came ninth in the English Schools' Championships when representing Kent.
Considering this was his first season of race-walking, to finish so high was exceptional.
But Robert surpassed that
effort when competing in the National Race-Walking Inter- Counties Championship, when he finished a superb fourth, beating many vastly experienced walkers from all parts of the United Kingdom.
