Invisible' MP Geraint is no community saint

12:03pm Wednesday 2nd May 2001

Having long written off New Addington as a place where Tory council candidates have needed police protection due to death threats, I have to thank the Tramlink extension for opening my eyes to its benefits.

So, rather than driving to the Purley Way superstores, my wife and I now enjoy shopping at the small shops and the Tuesday market.

We are also looking forward to the imminent opening of the refurbished pool and leisure centre, and would encourage commuters with season tickets to adventure to the end of the line and explore a little.

An extra tram stop by Deepdene Avenue at the tunnel entrance would make our joy complete and serve Archbishop Tenison's school too.

However, given that our MP Geraint Davies has been notable for his invisibility and failure to reply to letters over the last four years (one local paper's editorial gave him 10 out of 10 for toadying and one out of 10 for impact), I have to be cynical about the sudden flurry of contact posters, photo-calls and “Save Our Tesco” petitions that he is currently indulging in.

I would advise anyone who wants their Tesco saved to make the best use of him before' the General Election, as (win or lose) you won't hear much from him afterwards.
