A-level advice on offer

9:28am Tuesday 7th August 2001

AS the suspense of waiting for A-level results becomes too much to bear for some, the University of Hertfordshire has stepped in with some clearing advice.

Although for many teenagers gaining their expected grades and securing their university place is simply a formality, for some who don't meet the requirements the next month can be a traumatic time.

In the first instance, Dr Stephen Boffey, admissions director at the University of Hertfordshire advises: "Don't panic".

He said: "There is bound to be a course somewhere that is suitable for your child. You can look in the education sections of the quality newspapers. Alternatively you can find out about them through the internet at www.ucas.com.

"Choosing a university course can be difficult at the best of times, but clearing requires decision making of a different order and it can feel quite pressurised.

"The hotline staff will be friendly, approachable, very sympathetic and well informed about the courses on offer. They can help callers make the right choice instead of a panic decision."

The clearing hotline opens on Thursday, August 16, at 8.30am, the day A-level results are published and will remain open for the next two weeks. The number to ring is 01707 284848.
