Welling United 0-0 Dorchester Town

WELLING United's lack of killer instinct in front of goal proved costly as two points were dropped against troubled Dorchester Town on Saturday.

Within the first 10 minutes Lee Blackburn, Ellis Green, Joe Healey and Ryan Martin all had clear cut chances which they failed to convert.

During this period the Wings should have been awarded a penalty for a clear push by Patrece Liburd on Joe Healey, an offence which would have seen a free-kick awarded anywhere else on the pitch.

Following the early pressure, Dorchester created a great opportunity for themselves in the 19th minute.

Sweeping football resulted in Kevin Hill finding himself in acres of space, but his wayward header failed to trouble Scott Andrews in goal.

Green, clearly irritated by the lack of protection he received from the officials, was cautioned in the 34th minute for a petulant foul.

Healey set up a chance for Rob Quinn just before half-time before Gary Bowles evened up the bookings count when pulled up for a foul on Martin.

The hosts had another great opportunity 10 minutes into the second half when excellent play by man of the match Craig Braham-Barrett and two dummies from Welling forwards left Blackburn with another clear sight of goal.

His shot was hard and low, but Dorchester keeper Gareth Stewart thwarted him with a fine save.

Matthew McEntegart appeared unfortunate to be booked on the hour mark before Dorchester had their best two chances of the match.

When substitute Mitchell Nicholson found himself clean through on goal, Andrews did well to block the shot.

The ball rebounded to Nick Crittenden, but the former Chelsea player placed his effort wide of the near post.

Welling had another let off moments later when Ryan Moss turned McEntegart and crossed for Nicholson, but like Hill in the first half, he failed to trouble Andrews.

As the game became stretched Welling made changes, first bringing on Sol Pinnock for Green and then making a double change as Blackburn and Martin made way to be replaced by Sonny Cobbs and Seb Schoburgh.

Sandwiched in between, a yellow card for Crittenden levelled the cautions count.

Two final chances went begging late on as first Frankie Chappell headed just over following more good work by Braham-Barrett and then Healey set up an opening for Pinnock, but he failed to get enough power in his shot to really trouble Stewart.

When the final whistle went, it was clear that the visitors from Dorset were happier with the result.

On a positive note, although the score was the same, this was a far better performance than the one Welling produced at Bognor in midweek where they were lucky to come home even with a point.

Welling: S Andrews, Johnson, Braham-Barrett, Quinn, McEntegart, Chappell, Green, D Smith, Healey, Blackburn, Martin. Subs: Turner, Cobbs, Pinnock, Scoburgh, G Andrews. Att: 560
