ALAN Pardew has confirmed Madjid Bougherra is likely to leave the The Valley.

The Algerian central defender has been linked with a move to Spanish side Real Betis throughout the summer and they remain strong favourites to sign the former Sheffield Wednesday player.

Pardew's side maintained their unbeaten pre-season record with a 1-0 win at Brighton on Saturday, a game which Bougherra started.

And although pleased with the way things are going on the pitch, the manager conceded Bougherra and others are still likely to depart.

He said: "We always prepare very strongly and haven't made any purchases other than Mark Hudson on a free transfer.

"We are maybe going to lose a couple more players yet, but all I can do is work with the ones I've got and they worked absolutely brilliantly today.

"Real Betis have been in the frame for a long while with Madjid. They still are and Madjid will probably be sold I think."

Pardew is still desperate to draft some fresh faces in before the season kicks-off against Swansea on Saturday week and said recently a defender remains his number one priority.

With Bougherra seemingly on his way out, the need to strengthen at the back becomes even greater and the Addicks have been strongly linked with a loan move for Pompey's Martin Cranie.

Pardew says the search is on-going and enquiries have been made for several individuals, but nothing has come of it yet.

"Some contact has been made and we are waiting for answers from clubs," he said.

"There is nothing concrete and I don't expect anything to happen in the next two or three days."

Another potential headache for the manager is the injury sustained by goalkeeper Nicky Weaver immediately before Saturday's game at The Withdean.

Pardew explained: "Nicky Weaver has hurt his knee in the warm-up.

"Unfortunately he got it caught in the ground because it was a sticky pitch today and we are now having to wait and see what the scan says.

"I think Callum Christie only had one save to make and he accomplished that quite well.

"It was a great day for him with a clean sheet and that is all he would want. In all honesty the real business was out there in front of him.

"In terms of our performance today, I thought we were really sharp, fit and everybody is in really good form, so whoever I bring into this team now has got some major competition."

Teenager Jonjo Shelvey impressed again in a game which Charlton dominated and the manager is happy with the way the 16-year-old is adapting to life in the first team.

"He and Therry Racon played well and Jonjo is progressing nicely," added Pardew.

"The boy is still only 16 so we have to be patient. He makes the odd error but I thought we were very quick and sharp today on a sticky pitch."

Luke Varney and Andy Gray led Charlton's attack at Brighton, but neither were able to convert any of the numerous opportunities which came their way.

Pardew replaced Varney with Chris Dickson on 54 minutes and the substitute made an instant impact by clinically converting Lloyd Sam's cross four minutes later.

The manager praised Dickson's contribution and said his arrival gave the Addicks something extra which had been missing until that point.

Pards explained: "If there is one criticism I had of the two strikers who started it was the lack of devilment. It is not often you say that about your strikers.

"Dicko is the complete opposite and at the other end of the scale because he is all about devilment.

"He came on and the goalie has made a good save from his first effort with one touch and then he has a one touch shot and it is in the back of the net and that is what he is about.

"There is lots more to learn from him but in terms of what he does, he did the job today and scored."
