Bromley 1-2 Welling United (AET)

A FACE from the past came back to haunt Bromley at Hayes Lane last night as neighbours Welling scored an extra-time winner to book their place in the fourth round of the Setanta Shield.

Former Lillywhite Lloyd Blackman scored what proved to be the decisive strike on 94 minutes following a mix-up at the back between Jerome Sobers and Bromley keeper Andy Walker.

Squandered chances were once again Bromley's downfall when, after throwing away numerous opportunities in the first half, they went on to miss four gilt-edged chances in the second period.

Welling kept plugging away by keeping their shape and were rewarded for their efforts when Blackman settled the tie.

After Danny Hockton had missed a fifth minute header for the hosts, Welling's Orlando Smith tried a cheeky 40-yard lob which rattled the Bromley crossbar.

Smith had another attempt a few minutes later, but this time his fierce drive was off target.

Welling might have opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Walker could only punch out a long free-kick as far as player-manager Neil Smith, who chipped into the near post for Chris Moore to head just wide.

Bromley retaliated with a long range effort by Gareth McCleary, whose shot was held by Wings keeper Jamie Turner.

McCleary's 40-yard mazy run on the half hour ended with his shot being blocked by Stuart Nethercott and then Gareth Williams saw his volley punched away by Turner as Bromley turned the screw.

The home side took the lead on 44 minutes from the penalty spot.

Peter Adeniyi sprayed a long pass out to Sam Wood, whose first time touch played in Williams and as he entered the box he was upended by Nethercott.

Hockton converted the spot kick, but there was still time before the break for Wood to skim the crossbar with a 25-yard volley.

Bromley's suspect defence almost gifted Welling an equaliser seven minutes into the second half when a mix-up on the edge of the area saw Omari Coleman pull his shot wide of an open goal.

The Lillywhites should have added a second three minutes later when good work on the left by Williams saw his cross run through to McCleary, who turned a defender before sending a left foot shot past the post.

McCleary missed another golden opportunity on 70 minutes.

Williams' brilliant defence splitting pass picked out McCleary in front of goal and with only Turner to beat, his weak shot hit the keeper's legs and away to safety.

Welling drew level on 78 minutes when Bromley's defence got themselves in a mess from a corner and Coleman scrambled the ball over the line at the third attempt from close range.

Bromley were unlucky not to regain the lead three minutes later as Wood chased a lost cause into the corner to retain possession.

He laid the ball into the path of Hockton, whose fierce volley from 10 yards hit Robbie Ryan on the line before being scrambled away.

Newcomer Reggie Savage fired into the side netting for Bromley before his header put Wood clear on goal, but when it needed a cool head, Wood slashed his shot wide of the far post with only Turner to beat.

Welling made the most of extra-time and in the first minute, Jerome Boyce's snap shot nearly caught out Walker before they grabbed the winner three minutes later.

With no apparent danger, Walker came to collect on the edge of his area from Jerome Sobers who, under pressure from Blackman, knocked the ball past Walker and the Wings striker ran on to roll the ball into an empty net.

Bromley's response was a shot from McCleary which went straight to Turner and on 98 minutes, a free-kick was knocked to the far post and laid back to Adeniyi, who saw his shot from three yards pushed over the bar by Turner.

This seemed to end Bromley's challenge and Welling safely played out the remainder of the game to earn themselves prize money of £2,500 and a place in the next round.
