WELLING assistant manager Stuart Nethercott says he is pleased the Wings put the brakes on their losing run in Saturday's 0-0 draw at Bognor Regis.

The visitors went into the game under a cloud following their shock FA Trophy exit at Wealdstone, but a gritty defensive display earned what could prove to be a useful point on the road.

Nethercott said: "I think it was a game we had to get something from because we were not up to scratch in the previous two matches.

"The conditions didn't really suit either side and it was the proverbial game of two halves.

"We found it a bit more difficult after the break, but certainly created a few chances in the first half but didn't manage to take them.

"I felt we had to go back to basics and thought we did so because we had to stop the run of negative results.

"The longer you keep on losing, the harder it gets to stop doing so."

Saturday's draw means the Wings are five points clear of the drop zone and Nethercott is looking to increase the safety net against Sutton this weekend.

He said: "Bognor are a team in a similar situation to us, so it was always a game we had to take something from.

"If we can beat Sutton on Saturday it will be four points from six, which isn't a bad return."
