WELLING boss Neil Smith is using tonight's London Senior Cup game with Wealdstone as a chance to have a look at some of his fringe players.

The Wings are expected to make wholesale changes to the side who memorably beat Bromley 3-1 on Saturday and Smith is hoping to be impressed by the replacements.

He said: "I'm going to start players who have been knocking on my door asking me why they haven't been in the team and it is up to them to make the most of it.

"Lloyd Blackman should be involved, as should Jackson Ohakham, Jerome Boyce and Franky Sawyer.

"Orlando Smith has recovered from his ankle problem and will have a role to play this evening."

Ironically, this Monday's FA Trophy draw handed Welling an away tie at Wealdstone and Smith will be grasping the opportunity presented by tonight's game to do a bit of homework on the opposition.

He explained: "Even though they will probably take a similar view to us and use tonight as a chance for squad players, they probably still will have a few first team members on show coming back from injury.

"It would have been nice to get home advantage in the Trophy as well, but at least it isn't too far north to travel."

Smith was delighted with the outcome of the Bromley game, especially the way his side recovered a 1-0 deficit at the break to record a victory against their big-spending neighbours.

He said: "I don't think we deserved to go in behind and I told the players to go out there in the second half and keep believing in themselves.

"They needed to know I had every faith in them and they certainly responded with a really good second half performance.

"We've created as many chances as we did against Bromley for the last couple of weeks now.

"The difference this time was the way we managed to actually put them away and I was very pleased with our finishing."

Welling have a chance to pull even further clear of the drop zone this Saturday when they travel to strugglers Dorchester and the manager has mid-table firmly in his sights.

He said: "It is a chance to put a bit of daylight between us and this is what I've already told the players.

"I was very disappointed we only got a draw against them when they came to our place because it was a game we should have won.

"If we win on Saturday, it will move us eight points clear of them and also pull us closer to other teams in the middle."

Richard Carpenter will miss Saturday's game through suspension.
