ST Michael’s School in Welling has made it through to represent the borough at the London Youth Games final after winning through the highly competitive Bexley tri-golf competition at Hurstmere School, writes Joe Batchelor.

Seven teams, each consisting of 10 players from four Bexley schools, competed at the event with each team battling it out for the right to compete at the London Youth Games finals at the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace on June 28.

The tri-golf teams consisted of male and female players from Year 5 and Year 6.

Schools competing were Sherwood Park Primary (four teams), Gravell Hill Primary, St Michael’s and Longlands Primary.

St Michael’s put in a strong performance throughout the day to come out on top with 1,446 points.

Longlands finished second with 1,318 and Gravell Hill in third with 1,312.

Jackie Lay, a member of the PE staff at St Michael’s, said: “I am extremely proud of us as we are a very small one form entry and a tiny school.

“One of the schools here had four teams in the event which shows just how well we have done.

“We had done some training before today but we have entered this competition numerous times and never got anywhere near winning so I am so proud.

“Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the day and it is fantastic to be going to Crystal Palace.”

There was also a fantastic performance from a disability team from Sherwood Park who with only two members on the team managed a great score of 727 points.

Each event was scored and set-up by volunteers from Hurstmere School as 25 boys from Year 10 were volunteering as part of their sports leader course.

Six of the volunteers will also be selected to officiate at the Tri-Golf at the London Youth Games School Games finals at Crystal Palace.
