RAVENS Wood School’s U18 rugby academy are just one win away from Twickenham after an emphatic victory over Sheldon School in the quarter-final of the Daily Mail National Vase.

Having reached the semi-final stage of the competition last year, coaches Nick Freds and Tom Beaumont are hoping the side can go one better this time out and book a trip to the famous home of English rugby.

An early try from Ravens Wood No 8 Jack Murtagh put the visitors in front after a sustained period of forward pressure.

Sheldon School pulled three points back courtesy of a penalty but Ravens Wood extended their lead going into half-time when open side flanker Ryan Souter was judged to have been deliberately tripped as he chased a chip kick from scrum half George Scott.

The resulting penalty try was converted by fly half Tom Coombs to give Ravens Wood a 12-3 interval lead.

Sheldon briefly rallied in the second half but any hopes of a comeback were short lived when prop George Tossell went over, following an excellent break by second row Rory Hitchen.

Ravens Wood continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded late on when prop and captain Tom Davey crashed over from close in to complete the scoring.

The semi-final will be played on March 11 at Broadstreet RFC in Coventry.

Trials for next year’s Ravens Wood rugby academy are being held at the Bromley school on March 3.
