A TEAM of Saxon masters swimmers beat off strong competition from other clubs to be crowned Medway team champions.

The Lewisham-based club finished on 642 points, well ahead of Tonbridge (276) and Sevenoaks (177). Despite not all of the 24-strong Saxon contingent having competed before, they all managed to win at least one medal each in a fantastic team display.

Saxon’s squad set more than 70 personal best times in the annual sprint gala, taking home a haul of nearly 40 gold and silver medals and 15 bronzes.

Trevor Wynne, who at nearly 70 is underlining it’s never too late to try a new sport, stormed home to take second place in his age group 50m freestyle in a time of 50.64s.

Hannah Moss, in her first ever swimming gala, worked hard and claimed a bronze in the 45-19-year-old 100m breaststroke in a very creditable time of 2m19.17s.

The club will be training hard over the winter for next season’s sprint galas and open water competitions.
