Admirals ready for opener
GREENWICH Admirals RLFC get their season under way against newly-promoted Northampton Casuals at Mayday Gardens on May 10.
The Admirals will be looking to build on their success in the Rugby League Conference, which has seen them appear in two grand finals and one semi-final in recent years.
Pre-season training has seen an increase in players wanting to play the sport, some new to the game and others who have settled in London from the game's traditional areas in the north of England, Australia and New Zealand
The highlight of the season so far has been the return of Anthony Johnson, who went home to his native Australia after captaining the Admirals to their first grand final win in 2002.
Johnson said: "When I completed my law degree and had the opportunity to return to England with my family and found employment in London, there was only one club I wanted to play for.
"I remained in touch with the Admirals while back home and was aware of the progress the club has made both on and off the pitch since I last played for them. I am really looking forward to the challenge this season will give both the club and myself as we strive for the end of season silverware."
Admirals head coach Jason Henley says he is pleased about the development of the club.
He explained: "We have made positive changes this season at both youth and adult level.
"Some have been forced upon us by governing bodies and others we have made to enhance the club's image.
"The changes are already reaping rewards with the increase, especially at youth level, of people wanting to get involved with something new and exciting."
