Becks finish on losing note
Beckenham 19-23 Guildford
THE home side should and could have won, but a determined Guildford simply wanted victory more on Saturday.
Their relegation was confirmed before this game, but their wish to depart London Two South on a winning note was evident.
They harried Beckenham at every opportunity and never allowed the home side to settle.
Beckenham opened the scoring when prop James Cleverly took an inside ball from league debutant Joe Narbey from the 22.
Leaving flailing tacklers in his wake, he scored under the posts and Narbey added the extras.
Guildford replied with stand off Brown going over in the comer for an unconverted try following a well-worked attack where the ball was kept alive through several phases of play.
James Hixon departed to be replaced by James Farmiloe after a clash of heads left him dazed and unable to see out of one eye.
Guildford's next try was scored by winger Anthony Wilde, whose pace made easy work of the opportunity.
A final penalty scored by openside Stewart left the score 7-13 at half-time.
Beckenham made hard work of the second half and could not break down the resolute Guildford defence.
Tight head Simon Dunford, who was prominent in the loose, was replaced in his last league match as Captain by Tom Hixon.
From a catch and drive at a five-metre lineout, Paul Currie was driven over and Narbey added the extras to take a short-lived lead.
From the kick-off, Narbey's clearance was charged down by the hardworking Stewart, who collected the rebound to score under the post for a seven-point score.
A penalty later and the game looked over.
Beckenham tried hard to keep the ball alive and Andy Martin, on for an injured Luke Aylward, scored in the corner from a move where forwards and backs kept the ball alive.
However, with three minutes to go it was always likely to be too late and so it proved.
