Blackheath enjoy a very Good Friday
Blackheath 45 v Blaydon 22.
Seven tries saw Blackheath to their eighth successive bonus-point victory on a pleasant Good Friday afternoon at Rectory Field, as the Club continued their run of form with a 45-22 victory against Blaydon.
Apart from a three-try burst in eight minutes mid-first half, which briefly gave the visitors the lead, the hosts held the ascendancy from the moment number-eight Truman Sullivan was driven across for the opening score from an attacking line-out early on.
Dave Allen turned over possession on the Blaydon twenty-two for full-back Mike Canty to show a wonderful acceleration of pace to pierce the defence for try number-two before the north-easterners hit back with their best period of the match.
Flanker Robert Bell crossed on the right on 20 minutes, followed by scrum-half Andy Davies squeezing over by the opposite corner flag, and when Bell added his second after a fine handling move straight from the re-start, Blaydon held a 17-12 advantage.
But it was to be short-lived. Four minutes later a move inspired by Club scrum-half Jack Walsh took play close to the Blaydon goal-line, and although the ball was lost forward, the platform was set for inside-centre Richard Windsor to breach the defence and restore the lead in Blackheath’s favour.
Two converted tries either side of the interval for Allen, both from driving mauls following attacking line-outs, broke the Club’s record for tries in a season (now up to 22) and wing James Stephenson took the ball from the base of a drive before diving over on the blind-side to stretch the advantage to 38-17 on the hour.
Wing Fraser Wilson popped over a vacant left corner after a strong break from centre David Clark, giving the visitors a deserved bonus point for their efforts, but the last word fell to Sam Windsor who broke away for the final try before adding a fifth conversion and gaining a personal points haul of 15.
Next Saturday Blackheath take on Fylde, one position above them in third-place in SSE National League One in their penultimate home game of the season. Kick-off at Rectory Field is 3.00 pm.
