A STANDOUT kicking performance from Luke Giles could not prevent Westcombe Park going down against Dings Crusaders.
Dings scored four tries to Combe’s zero tally, so you wouldn’t have expected this game to be close.
But with five minutes left, Combe were just two points adrift with an immaculate kicking display from stand-off Giles slotting six penalties for 20-18.
The previous week Combe succumbed at crucial times and it happened again on Saturday.
There were five teams in the mix not long ago, where a couple of results would have given them a good chance of avoiding relegation.
The other four have had mixed results but Combe are now stuck at the bottom of the league 10 points adrift of others in the zone and a further four or so points behind the remainder.
Combe fell to a penalty early on and a penalty try on 20 minutes, such was the Dings forwards' pressure.
But even with Sean Williams' try and Mitch Burton's conversion just before half–time, Combe had remained in touch, indeed leading a few minutes before the interval with Giles' four penalties.
Giles pulled it back to 17-15 within a couple of minutes of the interval but Burton restored the lead quickly afterwards before Giles closed the gap again with his second penalty of the half after 53 minutes.
This is how it stayed until Vince Murrell and James Litchfield secured the bonus point and the win in the final three minutes.
