OLD Colfeians RFC have pulled off a coup by unveiling Rupert Chitty as head coach.
The former Westcombe Park star played a key role as Combe climbed the rugby pyramid to become a regular fixture in the National Leagues, first as captain and then as a coach.
Chitty said: “I’m thrilled to get this opportunity.
“Colfeians have always combined the best of rugby with a great social environment and have a fiercely proud and competitive attitude to playing.
“The club has big ambitions to return up the leagues and a squad who want to get there. I’m committed to making this happen.”
Former head coach Ian Martin has moved into the role of director of coaching to oversee all of the club's coaching needs, while Andy Smith, the long serving director of rugby, is taking a step back from coaching after many years of exemplary service.
Smith said: “Rupert’s appointment is a tremendous coup for the club and one we are incredibly excited about. “Rupert is a highly respected player and coach whose skills, experience and character will have a great impact on Colfeian rugby.”
Old Colfeians was formed in 1928 as a club for former pupils of Colfe’s school in Lee.
Today the club is open to everyone and plays in London & SE Division Two.
It runs four teams every week, including a vets team, as well a highly successful junior section for children of all ages between seven and 18.
Chairman Dick Hussey said: “We’ve consolidated our position in London Two over the last couple of years as our young team matured.
“We now feel we have a great squad and a fantastic coach to begin a push for promotion.
“And, of course, we’re still actively recruiting for good players who can help us achieve our goals.
“Pre-season starts on June 30 and we’re raring to go.”
