Bromley Rugby coach Tom Standfield is delighted his side secured promotion to the London 2 South East division last weekend.

The club have challenged for the title all season and eight straight league wins since Christmas has guaranteed their promotion with one game remaining.

Standfield insists Bromley are in a promising position with performances on the field matching growth off it.

“We are absolutely delighted as a club. Even though we secured promotion, the greatest success this season is not just with the first-team but within the whole club,” he said.

“We have fielded four teams at times this season which is almost unheard of – we are thriving as a club and it’s an exciting time.

“Membership has gone through the roof, the junior section has improved a lot and that has driven the whole club on.”

While promotion may have been on the players’ minds, Standfield admits it was not his primary aim at the start of the season.

He said: “My aim was about delivering for the whole club. Going for promotion for the first-team was not my first target specifically.

“We wanted to create a pool of talent because that way you can ensure long-term success.

“We want to become self-growing through a strong junior structure and believe we are on the way to achieving that.”

Bromley travelled to struggling Burgess Hill on Saturday knowing that a victory would see them promoted from the London 3 South East league.

The league leaders were not at their fluent best but tries from player coach Standfield, George Scott, Kieran Leeper and Chris Copper ensured a comfortable 28-8 win.

Standfield was pleased with the performance but is adamant that the job has not been completed yet.

The 29-year-old added: “It is a very difficult place to go and play rugby. The pitch was undesirable – it was waterlogged and made expansive play very difficult.

“We wanted to go there with composure and take our opportunities.

“It was a big sigh of relief. But all the players said that something was missing because this is not the end.

“We have got our sights set on winning the league and going up as champions.”

With promotion sealed, Bromley travel to Folkestone on Saturday.
