Blackheath 12 Coventry 36.

Maximum points for Coventry in their title chase thanks to an inspired final quarter ignited by replacement Dan Rundle.

Just two points adrift, Blackheath looked to have the momentum on the hour, but an injury break for Dom Lespierre saw the tide quickly turn.

Outside-half Matt Jones knocked over an easy penalty for off-side, and straight from the re-start Rundle launched a break from his own twenty-two that took play to within five-metres of the Club goal-line before inside-centre Rob Knox finished the move.

Rundle's pace was again on hand as the wing met a kick along the right-touchline to capture the try-bonus point, and Sam Pailor's late score, after Coventry turned possession at the set-scrum, simply added more gloss.

Blackheath had not given themselves the best of starts. Knox timed his midfield run with perfection on 56 seconds after the hosts had kicked the ball out on the full, but looking to be expansive, Blackheath responded well with scrum-half Sam Eydmann and left-wing Richard Windsor crossing for a 12-7 lead.

The Club defended resiliently until Jones' grubber on the stroke of half-time saw Lespierre ground in the right corner, the fly-half converting from the touch-line for a narrow lead at the break. The home side held firm too under pressure early in the second period, and were warming to their task nicely, until Lespierre's injury break left them stone cold.

Blackheath are at home again next Saturday for the visit of Rosslyn Park, currently sitting in second place in National League One and looking to bounce back after their narrow defeat to Ealing Trailfinders. Kick-off at Rectory Field is 3.00 pm.
