Westcombe Park may well have only scored three tries to Basingstoke’s five but it was the Orpington club who still emerged on the right side of a 30-29 final scoreline, writes Mike Attewell.

Efforts from Gavin Dampies, Tim Richards, Toby Kochanowski and Sam Turner, as well as two Dave Byett conversions, secured Basingstoke a bonus point and a useful 24-10 lead early in the second half.

Combe’s only contributions up until this point had been a first half Trent Nattrass try, together with an Iain Gordon penalty and conversion.

But soon after visitors Basingstoke had gained their bonus try, Ben Faurie went over for Combe and with Gordon again kicking the extras and a penalty, the advantage was suddenly whittled down to just four points.

Gordon further closed the gap 15 minutes later with another penalty, but it was Basingstoke who now responded with a brilliant try down the right flank as Dampies got his second.

Most of the final ten minutes had melted away before Chris Lewis capped a fine second half display with a try.

Gordon calmly stepped up to slot the none too easy conversion which sealed a memorable win.

Westcombe Park travel to Hertford on Saturday (3pm).
