Burcham’s double puts Club clear
Blackheath 35 Tynedale 23
A comfortable win in the end for Blackheath, who on balance deserved their victory, but it was only in the closing the stages that the Club put enough daylight between themselves and the opposition to feel secure.
Indeed, it wasn’t until the 71st minute that Tynedale dropped out of range.
The opening quarter saw respective fly-halves, David Marshall and Craig Willis, convert two penalties apiece, but on 32 minutes Blackheath recycled ball through numerous phases before inside-centre Simon Whatling’s long pass put Chris O’Neill across in the corner for the wing’s first try for his club.
Marshall converted well from out wide, but as the hosts continued to press, Ben Franklin intercepted on his own twenty-two, the Tyne centre sprinting away to give the visitors parity at 13-13 at the break.
The visitors lost right-wing Dan Rundle to the sin-bin after the re-start, and Blackheath exploited the extra man by sending Markus Burcham over the try-line, but with Tynedale enjoying an edge in the set-scrum, loose-head Sam White was driven over to bring the Northumberland side level once again.
However, it was Blackheath who held the upper hand in open play, backs and forwards linking well and, as the pace intensified, Geoff Griffiths crossed for his fifth try of the season, Marshall following the conversion with a penalty for ten-point lead.
Tynedale responded with an unconverted try for Sep Visser after a cross-field kick, bringing the visitors back within striking range. But as Blackheath mounted pressure once again close to the Tyne goal-line, line-out ball found its way to Burcham in midfield, the outside-centre piercing the opposition defence and putting the Club out of reach.
Blackheath now look forward to two consecutive matches against near rivals. Next Saturday they make the short trip to Molesey Road to take on Esher before returning to Rectory Field a week later to face Rosslyn Park.
Both matches kick-off at 3.00 pm.
