Eagles boss targets new unbeaten run

CRYSTAL Palace manager Neil Warnock was in philosophical mood after his side went down 2-0 to local rivals Charlton on Friday evening.

Speaking after the defeat, the Eagles boss claimed the result must be put into perspective as it wasn't too long ago the club was struggling at the foot of the table.

He said: "You look at Charlton and they have parachute payments from being relegated from the Premiership.

"They have spent a lot of money and expect automatic promotion.

"Our expectations are high because we have had a good run, but it wasn't that long ago we were second from bottom.

"There are going to be occasions when we get beaten by better sides, but we just have to get on with it.

"I can't fault the effort tonight and I thought the fans were terrific.

"We go home disappointed not because it's a local derby, but because it's a match which we have lost."

Summing up his team's performance, Warnock added: "I was disappointed in the first half as we never got going. The midfield were poor.

"We relied on the back lads in defence and scrapped up front. We have got to create more chances.

"But I thought after half-time we looked a lot more positive and gave them a game.

"If we go 15 games unbeaten again, then we will get automatic promotion."

Warnock also leaped to the defence of centre back Mark Hudson after Charlton boss Alan Pardew accused him of a two-footed challenge on goalscorer Luke Varney.

The Eagles boss claimed video replays showed it was Varney who should have been reprimanded, saying: "Hudson went in with one foot on the ball and the other one standing. It was Varney who went in with two feet off the ground.

"He's the one for me who did the dangerous tackle. It just shows you what the eye can do.

"He went down injured and everyone was looking round. You will be surprised when you see it as it was nowhere near what people made out.

"I said to the ref that I don't mind if he reports it because I have seen the video and the fault was of Varney. It's disappointing."
