Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen has warned Crystal Palace boss Frank de Boer ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

De Boer wants to play an attractive brand of football in the Premier League.

But Vertonghen, who worked under the Dutchman at Ajax, believes it will be difficult for him to adopt his playing style in England’s top tier.

He said: “Obviously the leagues are very different. The Premier League is much more competitive than the Dutch league.

“I’m not going to say the Dutch league is naive but they all play to win. In the Premier League, you have teams with a different philosophy. Sometimes that will be difficult and different.

“But he’s had a pre-season to work with the players, he will be well prepared. He knows the Premier League. He has a lot of quality in the team. Palace have a lot of quality players already, particularly up front.”

De Boer made history by winning four successive Eredivisie titles in Holland.

He left Ajax to join Inter Milan last summer, but was sacked after a run of poor results in November.

Vertonghen, whose Tottenham team-mates Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld also played under De Boer, still had kind words to say about his former manager.

He added: “I know he follows me, Christian and Toby. And not just against the top teams.

“He’s one of those guys who watches every game he can. He will know how the Premier League is and how difficult it is. But it’s a great challenge for him.”
