Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew says that while the club can improve its fortunes using its current squad, he still wants to sign a big-name striker.

The Eagles enjoyed a flying start to the Premier League season to find themselves knocking on the door of qualifying for Europe.

However, a run of five Premier League games without a win or a goal means Palace are four points off sixth spot.

Connor Wickham, Fraizer Campbell, Dwight Gayle and Marouane Chamakh have all failed to set the goal-scoring charts alight, leaving Pardew, and the fans, needing fresh impetus.

The gossip mill has centred on Nicklas Bendtner and Bafetimbi Gomis, but interest is either has not been confirmed.

Pardew said: “We can give ourselves a lift [with a signing] so it makes sense to bring someone in for our fans, our players.

“We're after somebody who would fit into our group. It'd be nice to see a big player come in.

“We can improve from within, but having said that, we are trying to improve the striker situation with transfers.”

He added: “Most of the noises on the market are probably being generated by agents and the media. It is part of the game, I quite enjoy it.

“Most of the Premier League clubs are operating at a healthy level, so it's important we keep our heads and only do deals that benefit both clubs.”
