Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson believes Emmanuel Adebayor could be the signing of the season for Crystal Palace.

Merson, who scored 78 goals in 289 league games for the Gunners during a 12-year spell at the club, insisted that the former Tottenham and Arsenal striker is unplayable on his day.

The Togo international has failed to find a club since being released by Spurs in September but hopes to rejuvenate his career at another Premier League side.

“If he plays, and he comes here and fancies it, he is better than anybody,” Merson said on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show.

“He is unplayable. He is big, strong and good in the air. He is quick, he scores goals. He is literally a toss of a coin - what side he lands on.

“If he lands on the right side, you are going to get the signing of the second part of the season and everybody would be going, ‘why didn’t we get him’. Or it could go the other way.”

Palace have been linked with several strikers this month after suffering a dire drought in the league.

The South Londoners have not scored a single goal in five games, although the club’s early season burst ensure they remain in the top half of the table.
