Dwight Gayle has questioned Roy Hodgson’s decision to omit Crystal Palace defender Scott Dann from his England squad.

Dann, 28, has established himself as one of the most consistent centre-back’s in the Premier League since joining the Eagles from Blackburn Rovers in 2014.

The defender has enjoyed a characteristically solid run of form for Palace this season but has been constantly overlooked for a place in the England squad.

And Gayle believes Dann would have received international recognition had he played for one of the top flight’s more high-profile clubs.

“He's a great player and it looks effortless to him. That's a compliment to his ability,” Gayle, 25, told Sky Sports.

“I'm not sure why he has not been called up. His ability in every aspect of the game is really good.

“He's good on the ball, good defensively, reads the ball well and gives you everything you want in a defender.

“If he was playing at one of the bigger clubs he would definitely be around a lot more.

“I'm sure people will take note when a few of them get called up and they will start looking a bit further down the league.”

Gayle is confident of a swift return after missing Palace’s win at Liverpool with a hamstring injury.

“I felt a niggle before the Liverpool game but hopefully it is not too bad, and hopefully I am back playing as soon as I can,” he added.

“There's not a certain date, I'm just going to see how it goes. I think I am going to have it re-scanned in the next week or so.”
