Football fans - especially followers of Crystal Palace - are notoriously needy when it comes to summer additions.

We could have just won the treble and still wouldn’t be happy, although I agree it is a little disheartening to know that the Crystal Girls have seen more transfer activity than the first team this summer.

There is just something exciting about seeing new faces, even if we haven’t ever seen them play before nor heard of them.

New signings are what the fans want and we haven’t seen a whole lot of them yet in SE25.

The new screen being installed in the stadium and the new fancy gates leading to the car park are currently in our top five most exciting summer additions as things stand.

Saying that, I would much prefer this cautious - albeit frustrating - approach Tony Pulis has adapted as opposed to the scatter gunned shambles we witnessed during Holloway’s reign a year ago.

That saw 14 players come in, mostly including monumental flops such as Florian Marange, Jimmy Kebe and Elliot Grandin.

To be honest I am satisfied with our two first team signings, regardless of how unexciting they are.

Fraizer Campbell is our Cameron Jerome replacement who will no doubt add some pace, fight and give us some goals - something Jerome couldn’t seem to do.

I’m not saying we’ve signed a 20 goals a season striker, but he will certainly score more than Jerome did last season so it’s an upgrade.

Effectively that’s all we need to do this summer – upgrade - and for a rumoured £800,000, how can we go wrong?

I’d certainly prefer seeing us making signings with previous Premier League experience as opposed to see us blow £8,000,000 on someone who has yet to kick a ball in the top flight (see Ulloa to Leicester).

Saying that, if it meant we were making Brighton even weaker like Leicester have done it would certainly sweeten the fact we’d have spent so much money on one player.

As for the other summer signing, Brede Hangeland is an exceptional addition on a free transfer with more than 200 Premier League appearances and just short of 100 Norway caps.

Hangeland is the perfect player for us - a big, old school defender with plenty of leadership qualities.

It has been touted by many pundits that he is the best free agent signing of the summer.

It would take a fool to say he had a good season last year at Fulham, but Pulis will certainly get the best out of him.

The summer would have been a success if we managed to keep all of our key players, unlike Swansea and Southampton.

We’ve already seen progress in that aspect as Julian Speroni and Marouane Chamakh have secured new deals.

We are still waiting for Yannick Bolasie to do likewise, although fortunately for us most of our players have stayed out of the media spotlight, with the exception of Glenn Murray who has recently been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park.

Any Murray exit would be devastating for me.

The striker has still yet to get a proper chance in the Premier League after his tragic injury in the play-offs and he’s had a great pre-season.

Because of the current lack of signings, piecing together the starting XI for Saturday’s Arsenal game has been made a lot easier than I had expected it to be at this time of the summer.

The line-up is pretty self-explanatory as it stands, with exception of left-back, which remains sounding alarm bells in need of a player.

Having seen Jonathan Parr leave for Ipswich and Dean Moxey to the Crystal Palace up north (Bolton), I have been left stunned with our lack of urgency to sign a replacement.

Joel Ward has already proven he can adequately play there, but I’d rather him play in his strongest position at right-back.

My predicted line up v Arsenal: Hennessey, Ward, Dann, Hangeland, Marriapa, Ledley, Jedinak, Puncheon, Bolasie, Chamakh, Campbell.
