GREENWICH enjoyed a fine weekend at the London Youth Games as they took gold in the girls’ judo competition and in the boys’ handball, as well as silver in the boys’ judo at Crystal Palace.

The judo result was one of the most outstanding in recent years for Greenwich.

They finished fifth in the girl’s judo in 2011, so to step up four places was a significant achievement and to take silver in the boys’ competition marks them out as the strongest all-round borough in London for judo.

Greenwich also enjoyed some notable individual success.

Samantha Cabel won gold in the under 48kg girls’ category and Joe Charlton who won gold in the boys’ under 90kg.

In the biggest ever handball competition the London Youth Games has ever staged with 10 teams entered, Greenwich retained their place as kings of capital handball, beating Redbridge 4-2 in the boys’ final to retain the title they won in 2011.

The whole team attend Woolwich Polytechnic.

Winning team manager Paul Walsh was delighted with his team’s display.

He said: “I am extremely proud of my players, I am so proud I am hoarse from shouting my encouragement at them.”

In the girls’ hockey, Bexley went undefeated in a group featuring five teams by overcoming Lambeth (2-0), Hackney (4-0), Kensington & Chelsea (5-0) and Richmond (1-0) to qualify without even conceding a goal.

Bexley’s boys’ squash team also made it through to Crystal Palace.

After a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Enfield in their first match, they recovered well to defeat Islington by the same score in their last game and after a nervy wait found at they had qualified as one of the best group runners-up.

Lewisham enjoyed a great weekend as they took bronze in the girls’ gymnastics competition at Europa Gym Centre in Bexley on Sunday.

After the vault and floor disciplines, the girls’ team had accrued a solid 113.450 points, just .350 behind silver medallists Lambeth.

There was an individual gold medallist as 13-year-old Maisie Ross-Jessop of Grey Coat Hospital who won the female junior competition.

She totalled 28.150, which was 0.250 clear of her nearest rival.

Elsewhere, there was also success for the Lewisham boys’ hockey team who made their way through the qualifying group at Redbridge Sports Centre to earn a place at the finals at Crystal Palace.

The team are aged from 11 to 14 and was made up of students from Sedgehill, Forest Hill and Bonus Pastor schools.
