IT IS not often a race winner has a margin of five miles over their nearest rival but Glyn Morris now has such a distinction.

The Gravesend Road Runner won the Lincolnshire Boston 12-hour track at the weekend beating 11 other athletes in the process.

In the 12 allotted hours and despite poor weather conditions Glyn, of Bartlett Road, Gravesend, ran just over 70 miles from 6pm to 6am.

At the Shorne Wood five-mile race, hosted by Istead and Ifield Harriers (I&I), a record 260 runners turned out for the multi-terrain event around Shorne Wood County Park.

In a position reversal of last year's race Barry Royden of Medway and Maidstone Athletic Club crossed the line first in 28mins 27secs followed by last year's winner Martin Forder in 28mins 52secs.

David Hall of Dartford Road Runners took third place in 28mins 59secs while snooker legend Ronnie O'Sullivan stormed home to take 10th place with a credible 30mins 37secs.

I&I's Andrew Archer led the club home in 32mins 19secs and Kevin Murison, in 34mins 3secs headed the Gravesend Road Runners home.

Medway's Alan Newman was the first over-50 home in a time of 33mins 10secs and I&I's Pete Burton claimed the first over-60 spot in 35mins 50secs.

The men's team prize went to Medway's Barry Royden, Lee McMeekin and Bob Fursey with 27 points.

The ladies' race was also strongly contested with Andrea Green of Shaftsbury Barnet and Danielle Sale of Orion Harriers battling it out at the front of the field, ultimately Dannielle won in a new ladies course record of 30mins 54secs.

The ladies team prize was won by Bernadette Harrop, Marianne Povey and Vivien Goodwin of Dartford Road Runners on 33 points.

Elsewhere, I&I were represented in Kent's only marathon at Thanet where 26-mile specialist Claire Gaskill finished as first lady in 3hrs 28secs.

Close behind was I&I's Simon Parrin, competing in his first marathon, in 3hrs 31secs.

Dartford Harriers enjoyed a fine day at the Tonbridge Athletic Club Championships and Invitational Meeting setting three new club records and personal bests.

In the under-15 boys Tristan Demuth made his triple jump debut and erased a long-standing club record with a winning leap of 12.09m.

Club records were set by men's over-55 athlete John Seeley in the hammer and discus with 21.14m and 28.45m.

There was a trio of excellent performances in the javelin with Daniel Shaw winning the under-17 event with a personal best of 47.98m, Tom Morgan claiming second place with 44.08m and Michael Kells winning the senior men's with a personal best of 38.21m.
