BEXLEY netted silver medals as they finished joint second in the London Youth Games angling competition at Tyler’s Common near Romford on Saturday.

Brothers Harry and George McGuirk combined with James Matthews as they hooked over 90lbs of freshwater fish.

George McGuirk was the leading individual junior of the day, reeling in 53lb 5oz from the Ash Lake.

Croydon won the title and Enfield shared silver medals with Bexley. Harry and George’s father, and Bexley team manager, Alan McGuirk said: “They did really well.

“Our youngest angler was nine and he got second on his lake and we had the winner on the Ash lake.

“We just hoping for a fun day, but we’re really pleased they have got a medal.

“They love competing in this event, they don’t normally get the opportunity to compete with this many people, not at junior level.

“It’s great experience for them.”

The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event.

Funded by Sport England National Lottery, the event enjoyed the most successful year in its 34-year history in 2010 with more than 64,000 participants aged seven to 18 from 33 London borough teams taking part in 60 competitions across 30 sports.

The 2011 season covers 26 competition days through to finals weekend at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace on July 2 and July 4, including the Thames Water Regatta on June 4.
