A BOATING enthusiast from Bromley has been selected to represent Great Britain in the senior mixed crew at the IDBF dragon boat world championship in Florida.
Peter Li secured his place for the August event in Tampa after a timed run in a single man vessel called an O1 over a 500m course at Silver Wing Lake in Wraysbury earlier this month.
Competition distances at the world championships will be over 200m, 500m, 1,000m and 2,000m.
A standard dragon boat crew consists of 20 paddlers, a single drummer and one helm.
The senior mixed crew is open to any paddler over the age of 40 years and must include at least eight women.
Li has been a member of Thames Dragon Boat Club since 2003 and trains up to three times a week.
Dragon boating is recognised as one of the most popular sports in the world with estimated participant numbers of 20m, the majority being in China, although there is also a growing interest in America, Oceania and Europe.
