DARTFORDIANS’ U9s rugby team are celebrating after success in a national competition.
The Bexley-based club took part in the annual event at Burnham-on-Sea RFC in Somerset in what was the first rugby tour for the U9s.
Despite their inexperience, the squad of 15 played five qualifying games, facing teams from Olney, Woodford, Hertford, Maidenhead and Coventry.
Dartfordians won four and drew one of the qualifiers, scoring 18 tries and conceding only four to head the group and earn a place in the final against Welsh side Cwmbran.
Cwmbran were unbeaten this season going into the clash, a record they lost against Dartfordians who produced some sublime attacking rugby, tenacious tackling and a determination to win which saw them come away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Head coach Monty Meehan praised the efforts of his whole squad and was delighted by the good spirit in which all the games were played.
