Beckenham continued their unbeaten start to the season when they eventually saw off a dogged Cobham side to claim maximum points at Balmoral Avenue.

Taking the full advantage of the slope the visitors dominated the opening exchanges keeping the home side pinned deep in their own half. Beckenham’s defence held good for the opening fifteen minutes before Cobham took a quick free kick and sucked in the defence creating the space wide out on the left for Charlie Mortimer to score an unconverted try.

Beckenham were quick to level the scores as Craig Hulls put in a fine tackle and as the ball was spilled he was immediately in support to receive the pass and run in from the halfway line for an unconverted try.

Some ten minutes later the hosts were to score a fine try as Luke Harding took advantage of some good pressure from the forwards to make a break close to the line and as the ball went through several pairs of hands, Pete Isaac went over in the corner. The conversion out wide was missed and that left the half time score at 10 to 5 as both teams had difficulty coping with the wet conditions.

Cobham started the second half with a seven pointer as Luke Flower intercepted in the Beckenham half and raced trough to score under the posts, Mortimer’s conversion giving the visitors a 10 to 12 lead.

Beckenham regained the lead some fifteen minutes later when the visitors were penalised for being off side at the breakdown twice in quick succession and Ted Mahutariki duly slotted over both penalties to open up a four point gap.

With twenty minutes to go Beckenham opted for the lineout from a kickable penalty and were rewarded when Andrew Martin marshalled his troops in a textbook catch and drive to score, giving Ted Mahutariki the chance to add the conversion and extend the lead to eleven points.

The bonus point was secured with less than fifteen minutes remaining when the hosts repeated the exercise from the lineout with scrum half Luke Harding getting the try and Ted Mahutariki added the extras from the touchline.

Cobham finished the game as they started it by attacking Beckenham deep in their own half but they could not find a way through and there were no more scores as Beckenham secured the victory by 30 to 12 and remain in second place in the league.
