Greenwich Admirals cruised into the final of the totalrl.com Rugby League Conference London and the South Division play-offs after a convincing 66-9 win over Kingston Warriors on Sunday.

The Admirals, London and north Kent's top rugby league club, bounced straight back after Kingston had scored with a drop goal on their first possession with tries through barnstorming second row Chris Jones and player-coach Steve Walker.

But the Warriors were right back in it after good work by their forwards set up Rupert Freeman to score out wide.

However, the Greenwich forwards started to take control with powerful props John Stabler and Lee Fortis setting up a good platforn for lively young hooker Chris Williams to drive to the line and set up Matt Howcroft to put in Walker for his second with a well-timed pass.

Then, just before half-time, lovely hands by captain Glen Ainsworth, Dai Williams and Stabler allowed Craig Lane to beat defenders and push out a pass to Walker, who in turn passed on to high speed winger Dean Callis to score the try of the game and leave the half-time score 28-5 in Admirals' favour.

The sides swapped tries straight after half-time, as Greenwich mounted a pressure attack with Gareth Griffiths, Dai and Chris Williams all taking the ball to the line hard.

It was eventually too much for the defence as Stabler crashed over dragging two defenders with him. But a brave Kingston side deserved another try and hit back as Freeman burst the length of the field to outpace the cover.

But the tide of the game was firmly in Greenwich's favour and they scored another fine try when Chris Williams, as ever, linked play well after the forwards had set a platform.

He played in strong centre Peter Cheek, who passed to the always hard-working Jo Ludkin to make good yards before pushing the ball on to Lane to flick a clever pass to rampaging second row Robert James who, showing great agility for a big man, sidestepped three would-be tacklers to score in the corner.

Then another Welshman got on the scoresheet as James passed out to Dai Williams, who sold an exquisit dummy and beat the cover defence to score unopposed under the posts.

As Greenwich took complete control, another good break by Admirals' Parkhouse Recruitment man of the match Steve Walker made space for pacey full-back Tom Chapman to score.

Then strong-running prop Ricky Phillips beat two tacklers and outpaced the defence on a 70-yard charge to the line. Then, after yet more hard work from the excellent Fortis, Chris Williams cleverly darted over from dummy half for his second try.

The game finished with the Admirals in complete control against a brave but exhausted Kingston defence with the pressure eventually letting Walker force his way over the line to make the final score 66-9.

The win was made all the more impressive as it was played at the Whitefoot Lane sports ground, away from the Admirals home the Woolwich Barracks Rugby Fields, which was unavailable due to army commitments.

Greenwich Admirals' head coach Steve Walker said: "It was a very professional performance against a Kingston side which deserve a lot of credit for coming and making a game of it.

"We are delighted to be through to the Divisional Final next week and we know we have to really concentrate on that.

"It could have been disruptive for the lads having to play at a new ground, but everyone was very concentrated.

"The forwards were massive and some of the hand-ling in the backs was exceptional, we really showed the talent that is in this side. But the fact is that we know the final will be harder still so we have to train hard and make sure we up that performance level next weekend."
