HYOGEN Do Karate Club built on its recent good form by returning from the Essex Open Karate Championship with yet another clutch of medals.

A gold medal eluded the Swanley-based club at the recent British Championships when it had to settle with four silver and four bronze medals.

But there was no mistake this time, however, bagging three gold, one silver and a bronze, at the championships held in Clacton.

Ben Coward, 11, from Bexley, made a difficult four rounds look easy to take gold comfortably in the final of the under 4ft 10in category.

Lucy Peppercorn, who is 10 and travels from Upminster to train with the club, was another who claimed gold in relatively easy fashion in the under 4ft 5in category.

Bexley's Michael Rawlings was the club's most impressive performer on the day.

The 13-year-old grabbed gold after battling through three rounds in the 4ft 10in to 5ft 3in category in only his third competition.

This was a massive step forward for the youngster and as he only holds a yellow belt.

Jake Peacock, 11, from Hextable, won a well earned silver in his second ever competition, while team mate Daniel Read, 16, from Bexley, moved up to the cadet category and claimed an excellent bronze.

Coach Steve Groom said: "After three tough weeks fighting at the Youth Games and British Nationals, it was great to see our competitors on winning form.

"We will be training hard during the summer to continue the success at the English Nationals in September."
