BEXLEY boys’ cricket team have secured an appearance at Lord’s on Saturday after emerging from the qualifying rounds of the London Youth Games indoor cricket cup at Harrow Leisure Centre on Sunday.

They now join Bexley girls’ team, who earned their place three weeks ago at the girls’ qualifying round.

Bexley is one of only two of the 33 London boroughs, alongside Lewisham, to have their boys and girls win through to the Super8 finals at the home of cricket.

The weekend’s competition saw around 250 youngsters aged 13 and under scrapping it out to make it through to the quarter-finals.

Bexley emerged unbeaten from group two to make sure of their place in the Lord’s finale, beating Hammersmith & Fulham, City of London and Haringey on their way through.

Team manager Alan Easton said: “I am very pleased with my boys as they have given their best.

“We qualified last year.

“However, unlike last year, we’re here with the hunger to win this event.

“We still need to improve in our bowling department but the boys are getting better and better in each game and are really looking forward to playing at Lord’s.”

They will now join Ealing, Barking & Dagenham, Tower Hamlets, Richmond, Lewisham, Hillingdon and Redbridge in the Super8 finals.

The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event.

In 2009, around 47,000 kids took part in 30 sports from all 33 London boroughs.

The 2010 season launched with the girls’ indoor cricket qualifiers in early February and will run for 23 competition days throughout the year, culminating on 15 July.

Other highlights include the Thames water regatta on June5, the mini Games on July 1 and the main Games on July 3 and July 4 at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
