Beckenham entertained Thanet Wanderers in this crucial league encounter that moved them into the top half of the table whilst condemning their opponents to a place in the relegation zone with a 22 to 5 victory. But it could have been a different story as the visitors attacked relentlessly in the second half and it took a breakaway try late in the second half to seal victory.

Beckenham playing against the elements started brightly but got little change out of a strong Thanet pack. Following a line out near half way, the ball was quickly recycled and skipper Andy Glason was on hand to release winger Laurence Headlam who showed a clear pair of heals to touch down. Fly half James Perry adding the conversion.

Thanet started to play to the conditions and went through the phases until Beckenham simply ran out of tacklers and the unconverted try took them back into the game.

Beckenham were defending well and turning the ball over at the breakdown, with man of the match Pete Thorne putting in some big hits and taking the ball forward at every opportunity. The pressure finally told and the visitors conceded a penalty which Perry duly slotted over to give the home side the half time lead by 10 to 5.

Beckenham continued where they left off and their forwards and backs were combining well to keep the pressure on the visitors. Following a good forwards drive Currie emerged with the ball to force his way over for his fourth try of the season. Leading 15 to 5 Beckenham should have been in a comfortable position but were forced to defend deep in their own territory for long periods of the second half. But this defence held firm and the home side forced a turnover near their own line and Glason was on hand to scoop up the loose ball and apply the finishing touch to give Perry the simplest of conversions to leave the final score at 22 to 5.

All in all a sold display and one that keeps Beckenham’s feet on the ground but looking up the league table rather than down.
