GREENWICH’S Club Wellness team were victorious at the GLL Club Wellness Games at Brixton Recreation Centre recently.

Amateur sportsmen and women aged 55 years and over from in 13 teams took part in a variety of activities ranging from dominoes to swimming.

Indoor bowls and timed bike rides were two activities making their debut this year at the event.

The Greenwich team were crowned champions once again, with Sutton coming second and Epsom a valiant third. Greenwich’s victory included finishing first place in badminton and long mat bowls, but it was the borough’s overall strength, depth and commitment to participation which made them worthy winners.

The Mayor of Greenwich Allan MacCarthy attended the games and witnessed his borough’s performances in a variety of activities.

He said: “I was delighted to be in attendance to witness our over-55s emerge as the victors.

“I was extremely impressed with the performance of all involved and events like these allow our older generation to prove that they can be equally as competitive as their younger counterparts.

“Congratulations to everyone who took part and I look forward to next year.”

The centre was a hive of activity for the whole day.

Val Oliver, Club Wellness co-coordinator for Greenwich, said: “The Club Wellness Games gets better every year.

“There are more boroughs, more people and more activities, which makes it more competitive and therefore more enjoyable.”

Greenwich were awarded their fourth Club Wellness championship trophy by show business icon, Lionel Blair, who charmed the team members during the closing ceremony and on his tour of the centre.
