VIGO welcomed Surrey One side Old Walcountians to Swanswood in the Junior Vase and edged home in an ultimately thrilling match by the slenderest of margins, with Dave Winstone kicking the winning points deep in injury time.

Old Walcountians started strongly but found themselves behind within five minutes when Ollie Jarman took a gamble and intercepted what looked like a try scoring pass to race half the length of the field to open the scoring.

Dave Winstone took the easiest of his five kicks at goal with nonchalant ease, adding a penalty soon after to stretch Vigo’s lead.

Walcountians, strangled in midfield by Vigo’s defence, could find few opportunities, although full back Ollie Beales was always dangerous with his serious pace.

Vigo held out until half-time when the visitors made changes at half back, which altered the complexion of the game.

South African Gavin Welsh moved into stand off and instigated a fightback which rocked Vigo.

Tries by Sam Naylor and Ryan McGibbon levelled the scores before a brace of Winstone penalties restored Vigo’s lead.

Beales then scored a thoroughly deserved try to cut the Villagers’ lead to just one point.

In a nail-biting finish, Chris Mockford then kicked a penalty with minutes to go and it looked like the Surrey side would emerge as victors.

However, Vigo made one last gargantuan effort and tore into the Old Boys in injury time.

A hotly disputed penalty was awarded to Vigo fully 45m out, which Winstone smashed over to settle the match and the nerves of the large crowd.
